Why is Children’s Day celebrated and what can schools do on November 14?

Children's day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India, on November 14th. Pandit Nehru loved children and believed that the fate of a nation is determined by the welfare, education and development of children. Along with his birth anniversary, children's day, or Bal Diwas, is celebrated to raise awareness of children's education and rights.

 The history behind the day

Before 1956, we would celebrate children’s day on November 20th, the day when world children’s day is celebrated. But after the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Indian parliament passed a resolution that declared November 14, his birthday, as children's day. We celebrated Children's Day for the first time on November 14, 1957. On Bal Diwas, we pay tribute to the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who was called Chacha Nehru by the children and pledge to work towards child welfare by educating people on child care and rights.

Some facts about Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s life

  • Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born in a Kashmiri Brahmin family in 1889. His father, “Motilal Nehru” was a well-known lawyer who played an active role in Indian independence.
  • Pandit Nehru played a prominent role in the Indian freedom movement along with Mahatma Gandhi and several other prominent leaders of the Indian National Congress.
